FAQ
training manager coach
What is the difference between a manager-coach and a professional coach?
The manager-coach uses questioning, listening, and empowerment techniques within their managerial role. They remain responsible for their team's objectives, decisions, and performance. The professional coach adopts a position external to the hierarchical relationship and supports an individual in achieving defined objectives within a specific and confidential framework.
In what situations should one adopt a manager-coach approach?
The manager-coach approach is particularly useful when an employee is experiencing a roadblock, lacks confidence, or needs to develop a new skill or seeks a solution himself. It also allows for support during a new job transition, career advancement, or a change in responsibilities. It is less suitable when an urgent decision needs to be made or a specific instruction must be implemented immediately.
How can you coach an employee without doing the work for them?
The manager must resist the temptation to immediately offer their own solution. They can help the employee clarify the situation, identify obstacles, and explore several courses of action through structured questions. The employee then chooses a solution and commits to concrete actions, while the manager provides appropriate follow-up.
Is the manager-coach approach suitable for all employees?
The approach must be adapted to each employee's level of autonomy, experience, and situation. A new employee may need more guidance and direction, while an experienced employee will benefit more from questions that encourage reflection and initiative. The manager thus learns to alternate between support, guidance, and directiveness as needed.
